Opening non excel file

When I right click on a text file, go to Open File, the excel app does not
show up. I browse to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\ Office12\excel.exe.
Choosing this app does not put it on the list of available programs, but
choosing excelcnv.exe does. However, when using excelcnv the program does
not open up.

Right now I have been able to open the file by first launching the
application and then going through its Open method (or drag & dropping).

How can I get the right click and open to work?

Thanks for your reply.

When using the instructions from the suggested article, it seems as though
it only removes the programs from the "Recommended Programs" list. The
program just got moved to the "Other Programs" list within the "Open With"
dialog box. So how do I remove it from the "Other Programs" list?
