"Opening Mail Attachment" dialog box

When I open a .pps (Power Point) attachment in a received email, I get the
subject dialog box with the "always ask before opening this type of file" not
available to be unchecked (in other words, it is "grayed out"). This issue
was addressed for Outlook 2002 at this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817422. I did use the repair feature on the
Office CD with no luck. The software was pre-installed by the computer
manufacturer, so MS will not support & the computer manufacturer (Dell) could
not fix the problem, even after 2 hours on remote assist. The OS is Vista
Home Premium, & A/V is Grisoft AVG Pro & Outlook 2007 is part of MS Office
Small Business 2007. This only occurs with a .pps attachment. Thanks.

This is a machine wide behavior change so you can only do this as an admin.
Launch Outlook as an admin and open the attachment and you can toggle the
option.

Hi Robert:
Thanks for your prompt reply. I am the admin (sole user on home computer). I
opened Outlook, opened the attachment, but I have to admit ignorance about
what you mean by "toggling the option". I did right click when the attachment
was open, but could not figure out what to toggle. BTW, when I save the file
to the Desktop or HDD I do not get this dialog box, so it must be something
within Outlook 2007 that I have to configure. I humbly request your
assistance & clarification. I did open the link howto-outlook.com but could
not locate anything about this. Thanks.

In Windows Vista, even when logged on as an admin, you run applications in a
user context. To force an application to lauch with administrator
priviledges right click the Outlook shortcut and choose Run as
Administrator. When you now open the attachment you'll notice that the
option isn't greyed out and you can toggle it on/off.

Hi Roady:
Sorry I am tardy in replying to your post, but it is "fixed". Here is what I
had to do.
When I right clicked on the Outlook 2007 shortcut, I did not get an option
to Run as Administrator. So...after looking around, I went to Control
Panel/User Accounts and clicked on the option to "Turn User Account on or
off". It was on by default, so I turned it off, went back to the message in
Outlook, clicked on the .pps attachment and voila! The dialog box gave me the
option to uncheck the box, which I did. But to make sure the dialog box did
not return, I had to go back & turn on the User Account control. Now the
dialog box does not appear when I click to open the .pps attachment. I owe
you a "cool" one. Thanks for the education and taking the time to help me

You're welcome! :)

Note that the right click option to run as administrator doesn't appear on
the Outlook icon at the top of the Start Menu. You can however use the
shortcut in the Quick Launch Toolbar to run it as an admin.

Roady ~ Can yo tell me how to fixc this same issuefor Windows7? I am the
Administrator, but the box for Word and Excel docs is greyed so it can't be
checked.

It works in a similar way but use the Outlook shortcut in the All Programs
section of the Start Menu instead and hold SHIFT while right clicking the
shortcut.
There is also a way to do this with the shortcut on the Taskbar (if you
pinned Outlook to the Taskbar).
