Opening files and context clicks very slow only when connected to network

Wierd problem. When opening files (.txt, .doc, .jpg, etc) it can take 15-30
seconds before the file will open properly. Also, when right-clicking on
these files, I get the same 15-30 second delay.

If I disable my network interface, this problem goes away. Everything works
perfect. When I re-enable the interface, my problem returns.

I'm running Windows XP Professional - Service Pack 2
2.4 Ghz HT Processor
768 MB RAM
2 GB Swap (1.83 GB free)
80 GB Hard Drive (54 GB Free)

I've recently defragged, scanned for spyware (AdAware) and viruses (CA
eTrust) to no avail.

Any help with this issue is appreciated.

Colonel,

See if a context-menu handler is causing the delay:

I have checked for hardware confilicts in my device manager, I have none.

I've installed the latest drivers for my NIC card and cannot reseat my card
because it is intergrated into the MotherBoard. (Dell Dimension 4600).

I still have the same problem.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I tried using the Shellexview software, disabled all non-MS context click
handlers one-by-one and all at the same time, I still have this issue.

More specifically, I only have a right-click issue on files (doc, txt, xls,
jpg, zip, etc). When I right click on folders or special icons (My
Computer, Recycle Bin, Network Neighborhood) I do not have a delay issue.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Colonel,

As you've tried disabling each and every non-MS extension, something else is causing the problem. You might want to trace the operation using Regmon from www.sysinternals.com. Do you also notice any network traffic when you right-click a file?

I have a similar problem. Opening a small (2k) non txt file via right
clicking and choosing "open with" notepad, is taking 30 seconds. When my
network interface is disabled, the problem goes away. When opening the file,
task manager networking tab does not show any significant increase in network
traffic; I also tried checking with perfmon.

I have Win2003 standard, and have defragged, and scanned for viruses and
spyware.

I only have one mapped drive, and it is connected. This probably may have
started at around the time I enabled the Webclient service and used it via:
tools -> map network drive -> sign up for online storage or connect to a
network server.

I have undone the above (by deleting the network place and stopping the
Webclient service) but the problem lingers.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem and solved it? Thanks.

Joseph :)

Same problem here,

Right-Click or Double click on ANY filetype hangs for 30 secs.
Folders and drives open and right-click perfectly.
Yanking the network cord out fixes it all.
My immediate reaction was to run a virus scan, because this kind of
behaviour is indicative of a virus trying to access the network or internet.
Of course the scans came up empty.

I run regular Defrags on my disk, so i doubt its anything like that.
I just defragged again, and ran a full CHKDSK to no avail.

I've run process explorers to see if anything funny is activated when i try
to open a file, but everything is fine. CPU usage at 2 %.

I wanted to see if it was something messed up in my registry, so i ran a
registry cleaner as well.

My last idea was to re-install XP SP2 and that didn't help.

I've logged on with a different user profile to see if it affected all
profiles, and here i am, logged on as local admin.

I gotta say though, i kinda suspect NAV so I'm gonna try something that was
posted below this thread by Czepcu:

1. First, disconnect your ethernet, otherwise this process will be
verys slow.
2. Go to your Norton Antivirus, and disable the automatic Liveupdate
3. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
4. Rename the file called CommonClient.dat to something else like
CommonClient.dat.bad
5. Rename the file called CommonClient_old.dat to CommonClient.dat
6. Reconnect your ethernet.
7. Until theres a new fix for this, DON'T do client updates with NAV's
liveupdate!

I hope somebody can sort this out for all of us, coz i'm starting to think
about rebuilding my pc......again!

Regards
Dominique
