Opening file dialog box - help?

It's driving me nuts that when I use the open command that the dialog box
comes up showing the list of files on the left and a preview pane on the
right. No matter what I do, I can't seem to set this permanently to show
file details. I'm sure this is something simple, but can someone take pity
on this poor soul?
 
Don't feel bad, it is the unchangeable (hard coded) default behavior.
