Hi All,

I have a problem which is driving me mad. I have tried looking on Microsoft
website, but as always, can find no real help.

When I open a spreadsheet from my desktop, Excel puts a 1 after the file
name, and will only let me save it as a New File.

If I open the same file from within Excel, then there are no problems.

Any clues??

Cheers

Norm

Your workbook was saved as a template. See "about templates" in XL Help

A couple of things that could be the problem if the workbook is being opened as
a template:

1. You saved it as a template (JE's suggestion)
Just save it as a Normal workbook and try it out again.

2. Your default action that windows uses is incorrect for this file type
(.xls)
If you rightclick on the shortcut on the desktop, you should see
Open and New.

Which one is bold? If it's New (for .xls file types), then
open Windows Explorer
Tools|Folder Options (win98 option--your menu items may vary)
File types tab
Scroll down to MS Excel Worksheet (*.xls)
Select that one
Click on Edit
In the actions box, highlight Open and click "Set Default"
Ok your way out.
