Right click the Word document > click Open With > select Microsoft Word from
the gallery of listed programs and check the box at the bottom of the
window, check the box that says 'Always use the selected program to open
this kind of file'.

How are you trying to open it?
Sounds like it's an email attachment.
If so, save first, then go to where you saved it, and right-click on it..

Control Panel>>Programs>>Default Programs>>Make a file type always open in a
specific program>>

Go down the file extensions and find your ".doc" Highlight it. Click "Change
Program" on the top. Select Windows Word Reader or whatever.

Windows Word Reader is designed to specifically open .doc file extensions
but won't allow you to edit. WordPad will.

MS Word reader is not a standard Vista app. It has to be downloaded from MS
downloads. It is free.

Your association will stay forever.
