Vista won't allow MS Word 2003 to be the default program for doc.

Vista won't let me make Word 2003 the default program for doc. files. I can
open up my files by opening word and then using the open function in Word to
open my docs but I just can't get vista to except word 2003 as the default
program for doc. files-When I try to make it the default vista just ignores
it. None of the other Office 2003 programs eg Excel have this problem just
Word! Please help this is driving me nuts.

Much thanks in advance

Have you tried repairing or reinstall Microsoft Office? Have you applied the
latest Service Pack, patches and updates for the Office suite? Did you
install Office with Administrative privileges?

And how exactly are you trying to make it the default program? What
specific tool/option are you using to do that?

Both Office 2003 anf vista are up to date & I have tried reairing and
reinstalling. The best result I can get is opening up docs via the word
viewer and then clicking on "open to edit" to make the doc open in word.
Using both the "open with" command & the "progam defaults" in control panel
result in "winword" being ignored after I click on it to be the default
program.

While the word veiwer method works I'd prefer to be able to open up my docs
in word straight of the bat.

Has anyone had this problem & if so how did you solve it? Have you solved it?!

After right-clicking the .doc, "Open With" and "Choose Default Program",
did you make sure you checked;
"Always use the selected program to open this kind of file"
