Opening corrupted PowerPoint

I'm trying to open a PPT file, but when I try and open it, i get the
message "There was an error accessing file c:/xxxx"

I tried opening a new presentation, and using "insert slides from" but
no go - says it can't read the file type.

the only odd thing is that if i open the file with the PowerPoint
Viewer, I can see every slide plus images and animation. But any
other way I can't open it.. I even tried renaming the file .pps and
opening, but no go.

Help!!

Also has the file been edited with different *versions* of powerpoint ?

What TAJ said. Make sure you try http://www.openoffice.org, too -- Impress
will often open files that PPT considers corrupt.
