opening attachments in the Windows Mail

I am trying to open a file attachment with the extender .doc. It fails and
tells me to set up an association to link the Microsoft word processor (which
appeared mysteriously instead of my ms word97).
After much ado, I found the Set Association control panel.. guess what no
listing for .doc files. Hey, I am just trying to do something I do all the
time in Outlook Express or any other decent mail program.

It should not be this hard to use this system.

I don't think Office 97 works well in Vista. Some others have had to
reinstall Vista because of it I think I read somewhere.

I would save the file to disk and then find a way to open it, such as with
Wordpad and then see if you can get it to open otherwise.

Your only current choices are to uninstall IE8, or else save
attachments and open them outside of Windows Mail.

So one of your IE add-ons was causing the problem?
Have you tried re-enabling add-ons one at a time to narrow it down?

There are others who are reporting problems between Winmail and IE8, so I
doubt its a bad download.

There are that many reports in the attachment problem that it dir sure
it's not an individual problem with a bad download.
Just a typical nonsense reply from MS support folks who at times do not
even think prior to replying {siiigh}
I really wonder how it might be possible to install IE8 and work with it
if it was a broken download. The more how just the situation of a
different app like WinMail should be affected ...
