What anti-virus?
Did it just have an update when this started?

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.

My system "windows vista" came with norton and I upgraded to the same in
Nov. 07...at that time I was using aol and verizon only not windows mail. My
problem began just 3 weeks ago. I only opened windows mail yesterday,
1.28.08. hoping this would help.
email scanning was never on. I will check to see what updates where
installed about the time I beganhavingproblems.

Please tell us :

Is this behaviour for all attachments?
Attachments from all senders or just one?
What are the file extensions of the attachments that will not open?

Have you unchecked the option at tools>options>security>4th down.

Can you send a message with a small attachment to yourself and open it?

This behavior is for all attachments... on all email accounts even word
attachments. I have tried sending to self at aol, verizon, and yahoo. None
will open. If I send it to my laptop with windows XP, it opens.
The optional tool was never checked. I did check to see if this was the
problem.

Norton antivirus is known to be incompatible with Windows Mail.
Often it takes a while for this type of problem to become evident.
Sometimes an update to Norton AV starts the problem.
I suggest you uninstall anything 'Norton' or 'Symantec', then see
if that cures the problem. We can suggest some free alternative
AV programs.

I had this problem before I opened windows mail.Never used windows mail
until yesterday.
I do nt understand why something is reccomended with the system..one
purchases it and then told to uninstall it...but I will do what you have
suggested.

The problem that you are experiencing is not one that I have seen as being a
problem of the program, it seems to me that a 3rd party software influence
is involved in your situation?
Probably Norton? As suggested.

Symantec pays to have trial versions of Norton installed. The two worst
security programs for Windows performance and especially for mail programs
are Norton and McAfee. Just about all of the people who help in these
newsgroups will agree with me.

I have done everything recommended and still I can not get attachments to
open. Is there anything else I can do?
1.Can I have access to newsgroup if I remove windows Mail?
2. How can I find temporary files?

You can't remove Windows Mail. Windows Live Mail also does NNTP news, but
there's no guarantee that it won't have the same problem.
2. How can I find temporary files?

Which temporary files?

Windows Mail is very hard to remove without also removing the rest
of Vista. You can, however, remove all the accounts under it and
then it won't be able to do much.

For access to newsgroups, you would then need to install a program
that includes the newsreader function. A program often recommended
here for taking over both email and newsgroups is Windows Live
Mail:

http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

It will hide, but not remove, Windows Mail when it is installed.
2. How can I find temporary files?
