Opening and reading PDF files

I cannot read PDF files. Just got XP. Sometime in the
past couple of days I think that I pushed a button to
indicate that I wanted to open a file with MS Word. They
all come across in squares and gibberish. I cannot
locate anyplace to edit the program reader. Please help.
