Opening A File sent from a Windows Vista User to a Windows XP User

I have recently emailed a file from my laptop which is Vista and sent it to
someone using XP.

They are saying that they cannot open it as the machine hasn't got the
software to be able to do this.

To open it she would have to purchase more software!!! Surely that can't be
right??? Can anyone shed any light please?

It is not a Vista problem. It is the software which you use to built the
file. So what is it?

Either she needs to install this

or you need to save the file in a sensible format like .doc or .rtf

(I am assuming this is some kind of document produced from "Office", if
not then what kind of file is is... last letters from filename will do.

Hi Daisy,

What sort of file did you send her? For any user to open a file, they must
have a program that supports that file type. The operating system (XP or
Vista) supports the installed programs and some basic common file types. For
the most part though, it is the programs installed on each machine that
determine what file types are supported on each system. Were I to send you
an Adobe .pdf file, you would need that program or a compatible reader to
open it as no operating system supports that type natively.

It is right. If, for example, you sent a file created with AutoCad, she need
only spend $4,000 to open the file. If you sent a Word 2007 file or an Adobe
Acrobat file, she might get by with an expense of only a few hundred
dollars.

That's assuming you wanted her to have the same capabilities as you.

In the case of AutoCad, you could print the drawing and fax it. In the case
of Word, you could save the text in a universally-accepted format (say
"Text" or "Doc") and she might have something at hand to read it. If
Acrobat, there are free PDF viewers available.

If you want help you'll have to say what kind of application you were using.

There may be a free viewer for it

Not without more information. What file? How was it created? What is
the file extension? What software does the XP machine have?

Of course it may very well be correct if the file you sent was created
by some 3rd party application in a proprietary file format, and your
recipient doesn't have that same (or a compatible equivalent)
application installed.

Can anyone shed any light please?

Resend the file in a format that your recipient can read.
