Vista to XP - compatable?

Simple question - My laptop (XP) has a faulty disk reader. If I ran a
USB to another laptop (Vista) would they be able to see each other in
My Computer and would I then be able to load a disk of software on the
Vista machine and get it to write onto my XP machine?

It would be simpler using ethernet
And yes if the two are networked you can install software using the Vista cd
