Opening a 2003 Excel document with 2007

I got an email that had a 2003 document attached but could not open it with
my 2007 excel. Why?
 
Hi,

Excel 2007 will open Excel 2003 XLS files.

What messages are you getting? Are you saving the attachment to your
computer first and then trying to open it, or are you trying to open it
directly from the attachment. Sometime opening an attachment directly fails
but if you save it first and then open the saved copy things work.
