OpenComm with WinXP!!!

I have installed WinXP and Service Pack 2 on a laptop. This was a clean
installation, the data on the harddisk was deleted. The original windows
version on the laptop was WinME and I had the same problem outlined below.
Yes I know its rubbish thats why I changed to WinXP.
I am using AOL 9.0! I get the following message DNS server unreachable or
unavailable. When I query the modem (Smart Link 56K Voice Modem) in the
diagnostics section of properties I get the following message, OpenComm - The
port that the modem is using is currently open by another application. Exit
any application that may currently be using the port.
What is the problem? The DNS error or the OpenComm error.
How do I solve the problem?
 
This can happen if you are using an incorrect driver. Also if another program
actually is using the port (e.g. a faxing program which is set to auto
receive).
