open office document not responding

Every time I attempt to open a document from the file/open, I receive message
"open office document (not responding)". The file or folder eventually opens,
but it takes a while. Is there any way to speed this up or determine why this
is happening?
 
Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.
