I thought I had seen an option in IE6 to open things in the same instance of
IE, rather than starting a new instance of IE. Now I can't find that
option. Is there such an option, and where is it?

Go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced.
Check "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts".

Thanks for that information, but it turns out that I already had that
checked. IE quit doing that a few days ago after I removed a browser
hijacker. Is there some other setting, perhaps in the registry, that the
browser hijacker could have changed?
