Hi everyone. I had a file on my desktop, and when I double clicked it, the
dialog box below pops up:

Open File-Security Warning

The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this
software?

It then gives the name of the file, publisher, type, etc.

At the bottom there is a check box that says, "Always ask before opening
this file."

I cleared the check box, but want to get the message to reappear.

Where can I go in to reenable this feature. Thanks for any help.

Hi Eric,

The option "Always ask before opening this file" is a per file setting. Once
you clear the checkbox and open the file, the Zone identifier information is
reset (NTFS). The only way to get the prompt back is to download the file
again and save to NTFS partition.

When you save files to your hard disk from a program that uses the
Attachment Manager, the Web content zone information for the file is also
saved with the file. For example, if you save a compressed file (.zip) that
is attached to an e-mail message to your hard disk, the Web content zone
information is also saved when you save the compressed file. When you try to
extract the contents from the compressed file, or if you try to run a file,
you cannot. The Web content zone information is saved together with the
files only if the hard disk uses the NTFS file system.

Thanks Ramesh. Would you be able to give me the low down, step-by-step if
you will on how to get the prompt back. I disabled (accidentally) the
prompt on *.reg files, so I want to get this back so they don't open
automatically when I double click on them. I am running XP home SP2. I
looked under the security tab in Internet Explorer, and explored the 4
security settings, but couldn't find anything to help me. Thanks so much.

Eric,

It's not a file-type setting. (but a setting that applies to that particular
REG file you downloaded)

Thanks again Ramesh. So there is no way to bring the dialog box back for
that particular file? I thought I saw you mention something earlier in the
post about saving the file to the NTFS partition to get the prompt back? Are
there step by step directions you could give me on how to do this, as I want
to bring the dialog box back for this particular file, as I believe you said
it effects only this particular, not all files with the .reg extension
correct? Thanks again.

Correct!

When you download a file (selected file extensions), the Attachment Manager
in SP2 adds a Zone Identifier string as Alternate Data Stream (NTFS
partition only). As you've unchecked the option "Always ask before opening
this file" and opened the file, the Zone Identifier is now RESET.

So, you need to download the REG file again from the same source, in order
to get the prompt again.

Thanks so much for your help Ramesh. I tried it and what you said works.
Do you answer questions for Microsoft Outlook as well? I am only asking
because I have posted a question there, but no one has answered it so far in
2 weeks. Again, thanks for your help and advice.
