Running xp prof and believe due to infection. Now when I boot up,it will only
show the wall paper and no other icons, not even the 'start' button.

The Windows Task Mgr seems to show all " zero cpu execpt "taskmgr.exe" There
is also an error message:-
The Window Explorer message
"c\docs ......\explorer.exe mdmp
"c\docs........\

'Generic Host Process for Win32 services has encountered.........
c:\docs.........\svhost.exe.mdmp
c;\docs.........\appcompat.txt

Any idea how do I go about getting the labtop back to normal, thanks for
your help.

Additional info, when I start in Safe mode or LKC, the situation remains the
same that is no icons on desktop. In the Win. Task Mgr, it has
"taskmgr.exe, system" - with some cpu readings Other than that, the following
items "svchost.exe (3 lisitngs), lass.exe, services.exe. winlogon.exe,
csrss.exe, smss.exe - all show 'zero' cpu reading. Any help out there please.

Meric,

Try navigating to: C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386. Copy & Paste
explorer.exe into location: C:\WINDOWS. Select 'Yes' to overwrite current
explorer.exe if asked. Log out & then log back in.

Task mgr-no the "explorer.exe ' is not there
Before I can type the location, C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 into the
new task, the Windows TaskManager error message appears, saying Win TaskMgr
has encountered a problem......details of the error

c:\docs.........\WERcc5d.dir00\taskmgr.exe.mdmp
c:\docs.........\WERcc5d.dir00\appcompat.txt

When I right click the desktop, nothing happen also.

This compag notebook comes with 4 cd: QuickRestore System Recovery CD (2cd)

This problem is most commonly caused by viruses and/or malware. If you
want to take the time to clean it up, you can by following steps here:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

However, working with a machine that has Task Manager and Explorer
disabled requires quite a bit of skill. Be honest with yourself and if
you don't have that skill, take the laptop to a professional computer
repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA). They can also
retrieve your data.

If you wish to just retrieve the data yourself and then restore to
factory condition, you can do this in several ways:

1. Slave the laptop hard drive to a working XP box and copy off the
files with Explorer. You will need a laptop-to-IDE-drive adapter.

2. Boot the laptop with either Knoppix or a Bart's PE
(http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/) and get the data off that way. Here is
information about Knoppix:

An easy way to retrieve Windows files is to boot with Knoppix, a Linux
distro on a live cd. You will need a computer with two cd drives, one
of which is a cd/dvd-rw OR a usb thumb drive with enough capacity to
hold your data. To get Knoppix, you need a computer with a fast
Internet connection and third-party burning software. Download the
Knoppix .iso from www.knoppix.net and create your bootable cd. Then
boot with it and it will be able to see the Windows files. If you are
using the usb thumb drive, right-click on its icon (on the Desktop) to
get its properties and uncheck the box that says "Read Only". Then
click on it to open it. Note that the default mouse action in the
window manager used by Knoppix (KDE) is a single click to open instead
of the traditional MS Windows' double-click. Otherwise, use the K3b
burning program to burn the files to cd/dvd-r's.

Many thanks for your response. I would like to try option 2. I have a desktop
with cdrw (and nero) and a usb ext hdd. Just to be sure that I understand you
correctly,
I burnt the knoppix software into a cd.
Then I boot trhe notebook with this cd , which means I have to change the
bios to boot from "D" drive.
Then with the usb ext hdd attached to the notebook,...(I lost you from
here). So can you explain a bit in more details, thanks

OK, good on you for trying! First, you burnt the Knoppix .iso in Nero by
choosing "burn image file" right? You didn't just burn the files to a
data cd? If this is correct, excellent. If not, reburn the .iso as an
image file.

Now set your laptop to boot from the cd drive, which I guess in your
case is "D". Put the Knoppix cd in the drive and start up the machine
with your usb hard drive attached. Be patient and if you did those
things correctly the laptop will boot Knoppix. Let the operating system
load. When it is finished, you'll have an open window in the middle of
the desktop with information about Knoppix. You can just close out of
that. Do that the same way you do in Windows - there's a little "X" in
the upper right-hand corner.

On the desktop you should see several icons. Probably there will be one
for hda1 or hda2. That will be your main hard drive. I'm not sure how
Knoppix will see your usb drive, but there should be an icon for it.
The two main things to remember are 1) the default mouse action is
single-click to open stuff; 2) Knoppix mounts the drives Read Only.

*IMPORTANT*: The reason I don't normally say to use a usb external
*drive* is because Linux cannot write to NTFS partitions. So if your
external drive is formatted NTFS, this is not going to work for you.
You need a FAT32-formatted usb thumbdrive. For instance, I use a
Memorex 1GB thumbdrive to retrieve client data w/no problem.

So, whatever icon is there for your external drive - right-click it
first and then left-click Properties. Now, I'm not running Knoppix so I
can't tell you exactly where to look, but somewhere in the Properties
there is a box for Read Only. You want to clear that box, Apply & OK.
Now you can left-single-click on the icon and the drive will be
Writeable, which is what you want.

Now left-click once on hda1 or whatever icon represents your Windows
partition with your data. Navigate just like you would in Windows. The
Knoppix window manager is KDE and it looks very similar to what you are
used to. Left-click and drag data to your usb drive. When you let go of
the left mouse button, you'll get a context menu (like when you do a
right-click-drag in Windows). Choose "Copy". For goodness' sake, don't
choose "Move". You don't want to do that even in Windows.

Now copy over whatever data you need and go to the button that
corresponds to Windows' Start button and choose shutdown. Follow the
prompts so you can get the Knoppix cd out of the drive.

Reading thru some other
postings,http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...ba44&mid=88751088-9428-4d55-8418-33e0dd7eba44

some one manage to get the icons back by copying the explorer.exe from
another pc. My desktop is also xp prof, so can I do that and how can I
do that, please advice.Thanks

In answer to your question about converting the drive to FAT32 - don't.
Just be patient and either take the machine to a good shop or buy
yourself a nice USB thumb drive with enough capacity to transfer the
files.

As far as copying explorer.exe, that probably won't work. From what I
remember of your very first post, your machine probably has malware on
it. Of course, it can't hurt for you to copy over explorer.exe, but it
won't be useful unless you solve the issue that made it disappear in
the first place.

I'm glad you were able to get your data and are now on your way. Stay
safe.
