Desktop, no icon, not even 'START' icon

Its a dual boot, c:xp d:2k e: storage. After the installation xpsp2 in C:, I
went to Windowupdates and install KB873374/885250/867282/873333. Somewhere
along the installation think its 'GUI', it ask a question I CLICK NO, THEN
CLICK YES.......... the process continue and restart the pc. Now, when boot
up, only the wall paper and there is not even the START icon.

Ctl/alt/delete/File/New task and type in "%systemroot%\explorer.exe", it
gives me

{{"window Explorer" -window explorer has encounterd a problem and needs to
close......... error signature Applame: explorer.exe AppVer:6.0.2900.2055
ModName:kernel32.dll code: 0xc00000005 }}

In "safe mode",it gives me 'ADMINISTRATOR' icon and User X icon. When I
install xp, I only have I user name X.
When I click on Administrator or User X - both give a dark page ///////

Need your divine guidance to resolve this monster as XP is completely new to
me,

Are you sure you have "Show desktop icons" checked in properties?

This behavior generally comes about after letting MS update your display
drivers. If this is the case, do a rollback via the Device Manager. Other
measures are to use Ctrl/Alt/Delete, end process on Explorer.exe and/or use
File/New Task and type in: Explorer.exe

when I boot up to desktop, its only the wall paper. all the icons (including
the recycle bin) on the wall paper (a green field and the blue clouds) are
gone. I there is not even the 'start' button on the L.H.S. and neither the
taskbar.

When I right click the desktop, you expected to see those screensavers etc,
but I cant see any of these. It did not even response when I right click the
desktop. What can I do to salvage the situation.... thanks

Can't even do a roll-back. When I boot up in safe-mode, it gives me a BLACK
page......... A BLACK HOLE ///////.

CAD, the Windows Task Manager does not show any "explorer.exe" for me to end
the process.
Using the File/New Task and type in "Explorer.exe" gives me the
"taskmgr.exe" into the dialogue box. Yes, it show some activity but apart
from that after that nothing happen or show up

On line 164, do I download 'Disabled' or 'Enabled' Always Ask Before
Opening. I suppose I save it on a diskette and then install into the 'sick'xp?

Is there anything I can do with the xp disc, such as repair
etc.................... (short of reformatting). Please advice, thanks

I did a clean installation in C: and after that I went to MSUpdate and
installed those KB's mentioned in my first post. Somewhere along the line,
think its was 'GUI' at I click, "NO" then the next question "YES" and after
completing the updates, the pc restart.
Upon restart, nothing appears on the desktop, no "recycle-bin" icon, no
other short-cuts icon that I put on prior getting the updates. So,
definitely, it pass thru POST but just that it cannot display anything.
Right click the desktop, there is no usual response such as screensaver tag
etc...... my goodness...............help help, thanks.
