Only some Audio WinXP Pro

I have just re installed XP pro, all is fine except for the audio. I reset
up the audio sounds in CP/Sounds etc. I test played sounds such as the start
file for windows, shutdown etc, all plays fine. But the system except for
system beeps, is quite as a mouse when setting up etc.

In a nutshell, I can play audio CD's, play sound files from the sound set up
panel, but no sounds for system startups, new files, win startup, shutdown
etc.

Any ideas please, (its too quiet around here)
