Only First Letter Appears in IE6 Title Bar

S

S Tracy

Running WinXP Pro with IE6 - current on all updates and SPs, but have an
annoying issue.

No web site name appears in the title bar of any IE6 window - only the first
letter of what would be the site name appears and nothing else. Netscape,
Windows Explorer, and all other apps do not exhibit this problem.

I've exhausted all my normal resources (including MS Knowledge Base) and
can't find this problem even mentioned - any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

Hi,
See this MSKB article.
225123 - A Single Letter May Be Displayed in the Title Bar:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=225123 If your problem appears to not be
caused by one of the listed programs, you might try disabling some of the
programs running in the background to see if you can find the guilty party.

Regards,
Don

Don:

Thanks for the quick reply. Have followed your recommendations including
eliminating about everything from Startup except required Windows services,
but no progress on resolving the single letter thing. Didn't have any of
the suspects mentioned in the KB article, but got rid of a bunch of stuff
anyway. On the bright side, system boots up faster and cleaner and that's
always good.

Any other thoughts?

Next step...
Check for malware:

BHODemon 1.0: http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm is a good
first step.

Then... Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm I'd run Ad-aware first, followed by
Spybot S&D.

You could try a repair of IE:
318378 - How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in
Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q318378

And, if you didn't, disable (for diagnostic purposes) any programs which
might be interfering with IE, such as internet security, anti-virus,
ad-blockers, firewall, etc.

Hello,

Becareful, I read today that ad-aware from lavasoft can cause pop-ups
to appear and they blame it on some spyware program. I would
un-install ad-aware if I were you.

That is nonsense. Where did you read this?

I had this problem and from reading this newsgroup got
the idea to reinstall my Popup Blocker and that fixed
it. Thanks for the tips, I spent a bit of time on
Microsoft site looking for a clue. I had recently
upgraded my computer from ME to XP and that was one of
the last annoyances. Otherwise the upgrade is a plus.

Thanks for the advice. I've had the same problem for months. Uninstalling programs called "Pop Up Defender", "Pop Up Manager" and "Pop up Window Killer" corrected the problem. These programs were on my computer but they were all turned off, but evidently they still affected the IE title Bar. Thanks again.
