OneCare printer sharing - outside the circle

I have an older iMac that is not running OneCare and is outside my OneCare
circle. I have a new Vista PC which is running OneCare and has an attached,
shared printer. I can not get the iMac to add this shared this printer.
Every time I try to add it from my iMac, I get Error: 256, "Unable to connect
to server with the provided password and user name."

The OneCare chat agent said it was because the iMac is outside of my OneCare
circle. How can I get OneCare out of my Vista printer sharing capabilities?
Had I known, I doubt I would have purchased and installed OneCare. This
stinks!!!

OneCare simply expands on the basic Printer Sharing functionality in Windows. It
cannot share a printer to a non Windows PC and it can't share a printer between
32 bit and 64 bit machines due to the way drivers work. In these cases, you
simply need to share the printer *manually* as if OneCare were not installed.

Your problem is not OneCare, but Sharing from Vista to the Mac.

long thread about his issues and he has done everything he needs to
regarding sharing between OS X and Vista.

if you had third-party security software to uninstall it. I am now
telling you to do this with OneCare. If the network now works, you have
your answer. I would not recommend reinstalling it since the antivirus
component of OneCare is substandard and the built-in Windows Firewall is
just fine for your purposes.

Thanks for the additional information, though I'm not sure that I would agree
with the "substandard" assessment of OneCare. It is not the best in class, but
it isn't what I'd term "substandard," perhaps "average." And the Windows
firewall is great for protecting inbound, but does nothing about outbound
activity.
However, I'll certainly defer to you regarding the printer sharing from Vista to
Mac as I have no experience in this area. Since this thread mentioned Printer
Sharing as the feature within OneCare, the answer is that OneCare won't share a
printer with a Mac. It can allow or disallow File and Printer Sharing in the
firewall settings, but the new 2.0 function of sharing printers more easily
depends on multiple PCs on the same subscription in a "Circle" and automatically
offers to share printers. Since OneCare doesn't run on a Mac, this feature of
OneCare is not available in this scenario.

I really find it hard to believe that OneCare would be so overcontrolling of
printers. Is there a way to raise this to the OneCare techs at Microsoft?
This 'feature' is causing me to abandon their product.

You're welcome, but I'm not sure why you think that Onecare is overcontrolling
of printers. In fact, it doesn't control them at all. OneCare v2 has a feature
to help people share a printer easily without needing to know how to configure
File and Printer sharing. You can ignore this feature completely if you are
manually configuring File and Printer sharing.
