One way RDP connections; what could be the problem?

Hi,

On my lan I have 2 desktops both running XP pro, with RDP enabled.

I could successfully establish remote desktop session into each other.

Both from A to B or vice-versa from B to A.

I added a third desktop C to the lan; (same hardware and software
configuration, except more ram)

Enabled RDP on desktop-C.

(HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\fDenyTSConnections is
set to Zero)

I have administrator privileges on all desktops A, B and C.

But I cannot establish a remote desktop sesssion from either A or B into C.

error message : "The connection was ended because of an network error.
Please try connecting to the remote machine again."

but I can establish a remote desktop session from C into both A and B.

Windows Firewall settings on all 3 desktops A, B and C is set to OFF.

What could be the reason for this one-way connectivity?

What should I check for?

Any clues will be appreciated.

What can I expect with telnet?

In a dos console I executed
"start telnet Desktop-A 3389"
<< and "start telnet Desktop-C 3389" >>

but in both cases it only resulted in a console window (with title "Telnet
Desktop-A"/ "Telnet Desktop-C") but the window remains blank; nothing is
displayed for a long time.
Later clicking the new window that had been spawned simply terminates/
closes it.

The port is open. Any errors in the event viewer?

Yes Robert,
On the server/ RDP host found a specific error in the Event Viewer; under
"System".
It says;
Source: TermDD
Description: The RDP protocol component "DATA ENCRYPTION" detected an error
in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client.

What should I check further?
I using the RDP software installed during OS install.
How can I get the version number? so as to determine if any RDP specific
upgrade is required.

Robert,

Problem resolved!

From the event viewer I was directed to lookup the microsoft KB article
323497.

It relates to the "DATA ENCRYPTION" error and accordingly deleted the subkey
for "Certificate" under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermService\Parameters
and re-started the server.
This resolved the "one way RDP connection...."

Dear Robert L,

I came across this post and i shared similar symptoms with sunkersett.
I picked it up from the point where you asked him to telnet to the host.

I hope you don't mind helping me out a bit further.

I too did the telnet and found the following error in Event Viewer.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: TermDD
Event Category: None
Event ID: 50
Date: 20/03/2007
Time: 11:14:18
User: N/A
Computer: RG
Description:
The RDP protocol component X.224 detected an error in the protocol stream
and has disconnected the client.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Data:
0000: 00 00 05 00 02 00 54 00 ......T.
0008: 00 00 00 00 32 00 0a c0 ....2..À
0010: 00 00 00 00 32 00 0a c0 ....2..À
0018: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0028: 0b 00 00 00 61 ....a

Now, i've tried searching through the KB articles for the error above but
all i can find relates to windows 2000 and nothing for xp.

If it's not too much to ask could you help me interpret the error and find a
possible solution.

Oh, to recap.
I'm trying to connect to my desktop using Remote Desktop and get
disconnected immediately with the error message

"Your Remote Desktop session has ended. possibly for one of the following
reasons:

The administrator has ended the session.
An error occurmed while the connection was being established.
A network problem occurmed.

For help solving the problem, see ‘Troubleshoot Remote Desktop problems†in
Help and Support."

Thanks in advance
Gaddy
