one of the filter drivers for the device is invalid

I am running windows xp home. I have a USB external Hard drive. The "found
new hardware wizard" pops up with this error message everytime I reboot or
start up. The hard drive WORKS FINE. All of the computers on the network
can access it. Recently I installed a USB flash drive (which works fine)
and got the same message. How do I correct this "new hardware wizard" and is
there really a problem.
