one last try - problems following a repair install

i think i'm sunk, but will give this one last try..

I was having a number of issues with my PC, so decided to do a Repair
install.

After doing the repair, i have a number of problems (more than i had before
doing the repair):
- i get no entries in my Start menu - although the apps do show up if you
select 'all programs'
- most of my applications, particularly the microsoft applications (ie - any
ms office apps, notepad, etc), won;t start, and i get the message "the
application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150002). click on ok to
terminate the app" - however, some of the 3rd party apps i have appear to be
ok, but not many
- the task bar on the bottom of the window is completely obstructed by
another gray bar, that won't move
- the text for any of my desktop icons is in reverse-video.

When running the repair, i had the following errors:
- Com+ raised exceptions...c:\windows\system32\catsrv.dll not found
- error occurred loading c:\windows\system32\inetcomm.dll. file may not be
installed or may be corrupt.
- same as above for msoe.dll and wab32.dll

Any suggestions on things to try - other than a complete clean install?

THANKS!!!
Susan

ran the windows memory diagnostic - all looks ok.

was thinking last night of other info that might be relevant:
- my XP Home Edition os is an upgrade from 98, rather than a full install.
- i was having an issue getting to some of the system tools like notepad,
etc BEFORE doing the repair, and was part of the reason for trying the
repair. However, applications like the MS Office suite were working before
the Repair, and they are not now.

I am going crazy over this. any help is greatly appreciated!!

I also assume your cd is not dirty or scratched...
well since the repair install failed...
you can do a new install...but do NOT take the option to delete or format
the drive...
You can install windows in another folder...and though you will have to
reinstall all
your apps and updates...at least your data will still be there...

note: some of the files in your previous profile may not be accessable...
don't panic...at that point you will need to take ownership...
(it's covered in "help")
