Onboard Sound Problems

ok, here is the problem, we have a HP Pavilion XE824 with ASUS motherboard
with Onboard Sound And video, it was updated from Windows Me to WinXP Pro
All the sound codecs and drivers where intsalled but when you go to Control
panel/ Sound and Audio Devices/everything under volume,audio,and voice is
grayed out like nothing is being detected. I have went into the bios for the
machine and activated the card as suppose to be done but still we are not
getting any thing.....
any help given would greatly be appreciated.
oh btw i just reactivated my e-mail account so i should be able to recieve
e-mails.
