On the quest for the perfect mouse

Dmitri

Hello everybody,

I'm looking for suggestions on this seemingly simple task.
Sitting 10-12 hours a day in front of a PC, I decided it's time to get a
mouse that would qualify as the best that suits my needs - that is,
comfortable, with enough (conveniently located) buttons to help my
navigation thru the PC.

One thing I established pretty early - it's got to be optical. That's
pretty easy 'cause you can hardly buy a mechanical these days.

Other than that I'm puzzled - there seems to be always something wrong
with those I tried.

MS Optical standard- OK shape, very light weel that clicks when you roll
it - the way I like it because of the feedback it provides. problem - no
feature buttons

MS Optical Wireless (with tilt wheel) - very nice shape, tilt wheel
feature is OK, but does not seem too practical unless you work on a very
wide Excel document or something similar. Another annoying (to me)
problem: the wheel rotates smooth (no click feedback), unlike the
standard mouse, and is seemingly hard to click on. It kinda makes sense
with this tilt they probably heeded to harden it to prevent accidental
clicks. Batteries make it a bit heavier hence more fatigue - opposite to
relief I wanted. Not too bad, but after 10 hours, you will feel it.

Logitech Mx500 - a bit strange shape (after 10 yrs of using MS mice).
Wheel is nice and light. The application switch button is a nice idea, but
is positioned in a weird place – kinda underneath your palm, so hard to
reach. Looks like the tilt wheel would make it a nice addition to its
features. Could be my mouse of choice (if I could not find a wireless one
that’s not too heavy) but the problem is: Logitech software is marginal. I
would like something fully compatible with MS IntelliPoint 5.0 that rocks

Logitech MX1000 laser mouse. A sort of a Cadillac of a mouse. Same
problem, I guess: very heavy. Definitely has to do with the rechargeable
batteries. Still too much fatigue for 10 hour a day use. Other than that
shape feels a bit weird but comfortable. Nice set of feature buttons.
ABSOLUTELY trashy software. Did not work out of the box, downloaded update
fared all right, but, man, such limited functionality for such expensive
that mechanically fine mouse!

In between I even tried Logitech Marble Mouse, which is a trackball, but
did not like the idea too much. I seem to need that wheel so much. Hard to
jump from a mouse to a trackball anyways.

So, any suggestion for a mouse out there? At this point in time, having
spent about $300 on mice this month alone, I’m open to any suggestion. Any
unknown brand of specialty ergonomic mice I should be aware of? Any
ideal, link or suggestion is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

A quick question: does it feel heavy?

A quick question: does it feel heavy?

ALL of the cordless mice are heavy. There's no getting
around that because of the batteries and extra circuitry to
transmit.

If you are looking for a very light HQ mouse, I would
suggest a logitech MX300 with the internal weight taken out
(many corded mice can be made lighter by removing an
internal "dummy" weight slug), except that it only has 3
buttons.

Also, the fewer buttons or extra features a mouse has, the
more likely you will be able to use your preferred mousing
software even if it's a different brand.

A quick question: does it feel heavy?

-------------------------------------

If I lift it and move it around in the air it's a bit heavy. If I am
just moving it on the table it slides easily. I noticed the newest
version of this mouse is slightly different than mine. I have not
tried the new one and can't speak for it. The link I sent you is the
older model. It's a lot cheaper than what I paid for it.

I'm very pleased with my MS intellimouse Explorer 4.0
(http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productdetails.aspx?pid=003)
Because I want my keyboard/mouse to work all the time and not being
dependent on having batteries to be charged/replaced/... this mouse is
exactly what I need.
It's quite light, accurate, button resistance is very fine and the scroll
wheel has kinda gel ?cushioning? which makes it very good to handle.
It has 2 extra buttons, the shape works fine for me and the optical
resolution is just right.

I've been using different logitechs lately, including the MX1000 -> too havy
and I was not pleased with it's sensitivity.
Maybe 1 minor thing is that the wheel needs to be pressed fairly to use
'advanced scrolling' but I'm not using that so often anyway.
