Friends,

Some months ago I came across a PIM or Notepad enhancement freeware
that has "on-the-fly" Search facility.

I have since got a new machine and as I failed to make note of the name
of that application I am yearning for it.

Of course, Handyfind utility does the function admirably well on any
doc even in any database prog, but I am talking of PIM or Notepad
enhancement freeware that has the feature in-built.

Any suggestions?

TIA.

Hi Rishi,

TreePad has good search capabilities. Is that the type of program you're
looking for?

Thanks, Susan.
Keynote, EditPadLite and TreepadLite are my favourite freewares in
their category.
All these three have excellent global search facilty. (So also
WhizNote).
What I was enquiring about was what I have just learnt is called
"incremental search".
Fortunately, some intense googling this morning led me to TextShield
Fusion which has this facility. By pressing Control + E and typing the
search term we reach the word on the fly.
And the freeware that I lost in my recent computer crash was this.
Finally, I must add that I use the Search facility in large lists of
words that have gone into crosswords that I have set.

I'm glad you remembered and found the app. The ACF pages have an old URL
(to be revised) - new info is:

Program: TextShield Fusion (was TextShield 2000)
Company: Onis Software
Author: Jeremi Onis
Ware: (Freeware)

You might also be interested in this app - which does an incremental
search in many types of documents. I haven't tried it but others have
given it good reviews.

note: it's listed in this category on the ACF pages:

Program: HandyFind

HandyFind is a faster, friendlier way to find words in documents and web
pages. It finds the words as you type so you'll find what you're looking
for as soon as you have entered enough letters. There are no windows to
close or get in your way.

It works in Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word, Notepad, Outlook Emails,
and more. HandyFind's innovative interface displays a small balloon to
guide your eye to the text you’re searching for. The balloon displays
the letters you're typing and changes colors to indicate if the text is
found, not found, or something you already found before.

With HandyFind, you can also highlight a word in a document and press a
key to instantly find the next occurrence of that word. In Internet
Explorer, if your search lands on a link, you can "click" the link by
pressing the Enter key.

HandyFind, which I have mentioned in my first posting in this thread
and which can be used across any doc on your machine, is indeed a very
useful app. And the quote above details its features.

Thanks for your kind reply - I deserved a flame.
note to self: read requests more carefully in the future.
