on network, can't block sharing

Can't block network sharing:
I've tried a million different ways, but I always end up at
"Properties\sharing\network sharing and security", but the box "Share
this folder with network" is already unchecked, indicating that I'm
not sharing, but I AM SHARING all.
Don't know if this is relevant, but in the menu above for "local
sharing & security", that box is greyed out, hence unavailable.

Thanks, Bonnie

What is leading you to conclude that you are sharing everything despite the
checkboxes being cleared?

Thank you Ben & Colin...
regarding how I know I'm sharing everything, is that on
other computer on the network, all files, even other partitions are
completely available to peruse.

Just noticed something odd.......
Every file I check has file attributes set as "read
only". I changed files to "archve", but still can't block sharing.
I cloned this HD, then upgraded to XP Home
Edition.... Is it possible all files are now "read only", and part of
the problem?
Thanks, Bonnie

Hi Bonnie,
Files having attributes of "read only" is one thing (and not having to do with "sharing").
Did you by chance transfer your data files from a CD to your system's hard drive?
Files burned to a CD wind up with attribute of "read only" on the CD. Then if you copy them, the copy has the same attributes.

Now, then, what is the sharing issue?

Thank you, Maurice. I cloned the drive using Maxtor utility, and
probably giving the same results you stated with the CD thing.
Regarding my orginal problem, That was at the top of the

From your other note, you said (as much) you are on a network and from other pcs you can see & navigate folders on the XP pc.
Is it all folders that can be seen? Is this on your home network?
If this is on a business network, do see your network administrator.

Until this is squared away, bring up Help and Support Center from your XP Start-main menu. Do some searches on "sharing".
To secure a folder, here is 2 suggestions from it.

If you are not logged on to a domain or if you are running Windows XP Home Edition, do the following:
1.. Right-click the shared folder or drive, and then click Properties.
2.. On the Sharing tab, click Share this folder on the network.
3.. Set any other options that you want, and then click OK.
