? on folder's Read-only attribute

WinXP Home, SP2:

When I check properties for ANY folders on my system, I see that the folders
all have the Read-only attribute marked (with a solid green square). I've
noticed that I CAN'T get rid of this setting. In the Properties dialog, I
can clear the Read-only checkbox and hit "Apply", and it SEEMS to stay
cleared. But when I exit the dialog and check properties again, the
Read-only attribute is again checked (again with a solid green square). In
the dialog, clicking the checkbox once clears it, clicking it again puts a
little green checkmark in it, and clicking it once more puts in the solid
green square. Don't know the significance of the different flag indicators.
But none of the settings, except the solid green square, "stick."

Why is this, and what's the technical difference between having a little
green checkmark in the Read-only checkbox, and a solid green square in
there? [I'm asking because a web program is having difficulties writing to
flat files and this problem may have to do with the Read-only attribute
being set on the folder containing those files.]

thanks for any help,
-dg

READ ONLY on folders (directories) is by design XP. See these articles...
