On board sound help

David Martin

Hi,
Just got my "new" pc today and decided to skimpon a sound card ( sad i
know ) and just stick with onboard sound. Only problem is no sound is coming
out from the computer, I believe the problem is in some way related to the
motherboard itself as the speakers do work (tested on old pc), i also tested
old speakers with new pc with no success, anyway a little help would be
greatly appreciated. And if it means anything the visulisations and
equalisers in programs such as winamp still move as though the sound is
playing.

System:
Athlon 64 3500+
1gb ddr 400mhz ram
Motherboard - MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
The onboard soundcard is listed as "Realtek AC97 Audio"

Once again any help at all will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well theres stuff like is it enabled in the bios?
They often have an option to enable diable stuff like that in the
bios.

Second obviously did you install the drivers? There are separate
drivers that come with your MB CD for the sound function just like
with separate cards.

You can check obviously in CONTROL PANEL / Audio and Sound Devices to
see if anything is installed. If it is then check the volume controls
and see if you have the speakers plugged in right.

Maybe the on board sound option is not turned on in the BIOS set-up, its
driver is not installed, or it is defective. Since the computer is new, call
your dealer.

I personally, and many of my clients, found that these on board sound
options are crappy. You should at least buy a standard descent sound card,
and stick in to an available slot. It does not have to be a very expensive
card. Make sure that the on board one is turned off in the BIOS settings, or
set to disabled in Windows Properties. Then install the new card, and its
respective drivers.

Start/Run and type dxdiag/OK
and under the Sound tab Move the Hardware Acceleration fader all the
way to the left.
Re-boot and see if that fixes is?

What operating system?

Open the volume control and make sure that both master and wave are turned

And that they aren't muted. And that the Playback Device is set to the
onboard sound.
