OLE crash in Access 2003

I have a testbank db. It stores questions, distractors and answers,
and creates different versions (mixes up the questions). Some of the
questions have graphics (according to figure x, which of the following
best represents the logic of the query?), so I have an images table.

When I upgraded to 2003, Access started choking on the images. If I
try to insert an object, Access crashes (though it will show those
images that are already in the table). That's here at home. My office
machine does not have this problem.

The only think on the web I could find suggested that there may be
some graphics program running that was causing this, so I unloaded
all graphics programs, but still have this problem. Does anybody
have any idea how I could fix this? With this problem, I have to
export the reports (exams) as rtf files to Word and put the images
in there--and that's a serious pain.

Oh, and the midterm has to go off to the printer in a week ...

Access 2003 no longer includes the optional 'MS Photo Editor' component, an often-used OLE Server application
for several common image formats.

If this is the problem, you may be able to get by by installing Photo Editor from your previous office
version CD's. In the longer term, however, it would be worth considering if OLE Embedding is the best
approach.
