Older "paste" function not available in 2003?

In some accounting programs, negative numbers have the
sign to the right. In Excel 2000 you could paste the
number and Excel would recognize it as negative, however,
this no longer works in Excel 2003. Is there a way to
correct this without using macros or formulas?

try using 'Data - Text to columns'

And just to add to Frank's reply.

On step 3 of that data|text to columns wizard, there's a button called Advanced.

You can specify a couple of things there--including how to handle trailing
minuses.
