Could anyone help me I have a simple question ( I hope!) I bought a new
harddrive for more space, my old harddrive has everything just the way that I
want it, is there any way that I can transfer my old files onto my new
harddrive? Or is it one of those deals where you have to buy a program to do
it? No problem there, but I am stumped, running widnows xp with sp2.
If any kind sould could help I woudl appreciate it!

The easiest way would be to leave well enough alone and just install the new
HD as a slave to the 1st.
This is easily accomplished by setting the new drive to slave(see back of
drive and manual for details)and then hooking it up to the same cable as the
old drive. Most EIDE cables have connections for 2 drives. After the install
and reboot you will need to format the new drive under control panel/admin.
tools/computer management/disc management
Then you can transfer your work files to the new drive after creating some
folders. You can also tell your programs where you want your files saved to
and on newer programs upon installation it will ask you where you wish to
install to.
If your really really tight for space on the old drive just remove a program
and reinstall it to the new drive.

If on the other hand you already have that 2nd connection occupied and need
to transfer old to new look for Norton Ghost.
Some HD on the market actually come with a program that will do the job as
well.
good luck

Now that you have spent your money for "additional" storage, I recommend
that you install your new hard drive as a second drive. Un-install some of
our larger programs from the C drive and re-install on the second drive.
Leave your My Documents where they are.

Use Windows XP backup to back up data (i.e., My Documents) from one to the
other. It is unlikely that both will fail.

It's still important to back up financial data to an external device.

I strongly recommend that you take advantage of the new
situation and divide things as follows from now on:
- Windows XP and all programs: Drive C: (old disk)
- Personal data: Drive D: (new disk)

There are several ways to move your data files from the
old to the new disk. Here is one:
1. Open "My Computer", then navigate to the folder on the old
disk where you keep some of your files.
2. Resize the "My Computer" window so that it requires only
the top 50% of your screen area.
3. Open "My Computer:" again, then navigate to your new disk.
4. Resize the this window so that it requires only the bottom 50%
of your screen area.
5. Using your ***right*** mouse button, grab a folder from
the top window and pull it into the bottom window.
6. Let go of the right mouse button. When prompted, click
"Move" with your left mouse button.

Repeat these steps until you have moved all your personal
files to the new disk.

You have to buy a program to do it. Try Ghost, True Image, BootIt NG or some
similar product.

If you knew as much as you think you know,
You would realize that you don't know what you thought you knew!

The new drive is invariably the faster drive and is where the operating
system should reside upon.

That IS NOT going to do what the person asked!

Have you checked the web site for the new drive? Most drive manufacturers
provide free software that will mirror you old drive over to the new drive.
I will look and behave just like the old drive, but with more space and
maybe faster.

There is software that comes with the new harddrive, probably on a
floppy boot disk. It will give you the option of copying all your
data from your old drive to your new drive, after it prepares your
new drive for use. Just hook up your old drive as Slave and your
new drive as Master and boot from the floppy. This is not a
dangerous procedure, because the data is only copied -- nothing is
changed on your old drive during the copying process. Just be
careful that you know which drive is which. You can usually tell
them apart easily enough by their different sizes when you run the
drive preparation software.
