I have changed my desktop background via the Control Panel Display option
but an old desktop background keeps showing up as a splash screen at
startup. It shows up and sometimes freezes the screen for awhile (for more
than a minute) right before the desktop appears.

The old background does not appear in the list of files under Desktop
Display Options.

Is there a way to correct this?

Thanks

My desktop background is working fine. Problem is that a previous background
I used keeps showing up during startup and frequently freezes for a long
time.

Here's a long shot, but have you tried "Deleting" the photo in question?
When it is no longer "Available" in your system, it may stop this???

I did just that. I did a search in the registry and found the background
graphic I was using and deleted the line that it was on. So far it has
stopped the freezing on startup. Since it was happening intemittently it
will take a few days to make sure it has stopped but so far so good.

Thanks

what it is is - the old background is a BMP while the new on is JPEG, therefore the BMP shows before the active desktop gets enabled

Change your background to nothing..... press ok, the goto display properties again and change it to your preferred background

That should fix everything

Both BG files were gif's but I did what you said and changed the real BG
file to a jpg.

I think taking the 2nd BG file out of the registry has cleared the problem
but really don't know why.

By the way, I think you need to have a talk with your friend George W. Bush
and get us out of IRAQ. {};-)
