Ask who does not. I have some I can't give away. I have boxes of hardware
that I can not give away. Everything you can still buy and pay for if you
wanted one but I will be throwing away god knows how much as I am not in
resale and have no marketing. If you wanted anything and you were within
driving distance you would be one happy guy if you wanted used computers,
hard drives, nic cards, sound and video cards,UPSs,CRTs.
Example:
I have a P3 450 Win98SE 80G main drive with bays and many external drives,
ATI 9000 AIW, Audigy 5.1 with speakers, max ram DVD/CDRW loaded with SW and
will run forever. Totally worthless and will end up in the junk pile because
it sits there all day and does nothing. Who would buy it or even want it?

maybe i don't understand what you're getting at... that computer is
relatively good. I mean, if you pulled the parts, you could sell them
on ebay or whatever. the 80 gb drive is worth at least 20 bucks. i
regret to say it's better than my current computer. (sad, i know).

If you want to get rid of things publicize your location and/or
email address. That P3 is about what I am running now, and it is
quite satisfactory. If you are around the corner I will come and
get it.

You might be surprised, lots of people particularly poor
students- you might put up a note on a college bulletin
board.

Funny thing is, that system is superior to what many people
are buying new from Dell today. Typical highest volume Dell
systems have intel integrated video and sound which are
worse than 9000AIW and Audigy 5.1 and no tuner. Certainly
the P3/450 and Win98se are the weaker links but are more
than sufficient for typical office, email, websurfing.

I am saying I have several computers that I will be discarding. I have
boxes of hardware I will be discarding. I have never sold anything on Ebay.
I have a house full of things I could probably sell on Ebay but I have not
done so. Not worth the time and trouble to me I guess. I would rather find
someone that could use many of the things I discard but living in hicks
ville this is not that easy. Example: If you aren't home during the day when
UPS arrives because you work all day and you want your package you have to
take time off from work or drive many miles to pick it up some other time
when you have to take off from work.

well, if you want to know why i'm asking, i'm trying to build a render
farm, and i need a bunch of computers, new or used. if you are just
going to get rid of the stuff, (this may sound naive) you could send
some of the stuff to me, and i could pay the shipping/handling fees.
may i ask where you get all this stuff?

Oh, I know that all to well. Most should but many do not. They would rather
buy the special at wallyworld or bestbuy. I have been upgrading my systems
piece by piece for a while. This particular one just got left behind for
some unknown reason. Like a neglected child it is now worthless to most
everyone.

i'm not sure i can afford it yet, but are you willing to send your old
stuff to me then?

First question in my mind is what is a render farm? Much of the stuff I
have is older stuff that I can no longer use. A dozen or so NIC cards for
example. Old hard drives that work that I keep around in drawers that I plug
in to all my active systems. Drives that are ranging from 30 Gig to 60g to
100g and so on up to 300 Gigs. I never use the smaller ones but they still
work fine. Soon I will have all high capacity SATA and the others will be
replaced. I just built a new System that I TOTALLY did not need for the fun
of it.(Spending 2K) Top ATI PCIe VID card and I never played a game in my
life. The penny pinchers that try to save a few bucks on one thing or
another assembling a System would get sick. I don't know personally one
other person that uses a computer for anything other than email, games and
porn. You mentioned sad? I just don't get out enough I guess. Hicskville
and all.

Tell me what you are working with and exactly what you are trying to
achieve and if I can help you out I will do so.

I have old gear I would not be willing to ship. Shipping is work for me. I
have to box it up and label it and haul it down to the shipper which is 17
miles away. Two hours of my time wasted. Throwing it away costs nothing.
You come and get it if you want it.

a render farm is basically a huge set of computers (usually 5+, doesn't
really matter how old or what specifications) who's raw computer power
is used to render the top-quality images and animations used in todays
CG films (Shrek, The Incredibles, etc.). although i am no professional
(ha! what does professional mean? ;-) ) , i enjoy 3d stuff and it
takes hours for me to render 5 second animations. maybe it's just my
old computer, but i don't think it would be much better on a better
one, seriously. (for a more advanced description of a render farm, if
you're interested, go here --
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1847365,00.asp)
basically, i don't care if it's a p3 450, that's good enough. i also
don't care if they're 'broken', if you're a pc builder, then you should
know that parts can be salvaged and reused.

You are probably feasible for me, from Maine. My reply-to address
works.

That is the way I see it to. I get so much an hour, time and a half for
overtime, my personal time is priceless. I can't stop off to do anything. It
all takes a special trip on my time. I have to walk to the end of the street
to get the mail if its plowed.

I will look at your link, I am curious. I never knew that older slower
systems could be made to work that way. I would never consider it and just
get the fastest System I felt was in my realm of a hobby and that would be
that. As a hobbyist I know that systems get old fast. I like to be able to
have the best which always gets cheaper so I regularly toll away fun money
to feed my joy addiction. I can't see any need for anything that I have
replaced but that is me. I don't keep broken parts but I do hate to tolls
good ones. Hell, I even hated it today when I had to toss old boxes of
hardware that I have installed. You would have use for old video cards and
sound cards and nic cards and firewire and I can't remember all the old
stuff I have that is useless now. I went to a mom and pop computer store in
a large city a few weeks back and he didn't care what I had he didn't want
any of it. He had a big box of his own in the corner.

Hi, I have a ton of computer hardware that I need to get rid of. I am
moving and I can't take them with me. I have about a dozen internal
modems, two 486 motherboards, a few 16 bit ethernet cards, two
sounblaster 16 cards with the CD Rom drives. I have more stuff. If you
or anyone else here is interested I will put together a detailed list.
I'm not looking for money but I would ask for shipping costs. Nothing I
have is very heavy so I can't see any one item costing more that a
dollar, maybe $2 for a motherboard. Everything is still good, I don't
want to throw it way.

I would like to suggest they could be used by charities.

Disabled people tend to become dependent upon others. I note that you
have little free time to spend on something like this. The putting
together bits and pieces, loading software, delivery and installation
would eat up time. I live in England and help a local branch of a
Multiple Sclerosis Charity and do this sort of thing. If you have
someone similar in your area I am sure he/she would be keen to make
use of the equipment.

It may even be of value for a School or Youth Group to take on and
open their eyes to the needs of the handicapped.

In many English Schools there is a Sixth Form (16/17 year olds) who
are often directed towards activities in the Community. Should you
have similar in your schools it may be worth pushing them to carry out
this type of activity as it will give them an understanding of
computers and take them into the community away from school.

Just a thought.

(ha! what does professional mean? ;-)

The definition of a "professional" is one who gets *PAID* to do
something.

If you paid your neighbor's 12 year old kid $5 to hook up your VCR,
you could rightly say you had it done by a professional.
