OL 2003 returns error 0x80040154 for POP3 send/receive

Hi there,

As result of an earlier question I have installed all office updates but
still this error comes back when pressing send/receive. The communication
with the exchange server goes well.

Task '(e-mail address removed) - Receiving' reported error (0x80040154) : 'Unknown
Error 0x80040154'

When I search microsoft.com for the error I find two documents related to
this error in Outlook 2002:
1.) to make a change to the registry after installing a hotfix of sept 5,
2004 - done
2.) that Outlook Express should be re-installed. Outlook Express is not
installed at all on my machine.

Thanks in advance

Well, yes it is. Outlook couldn't work without it, since thet both use some
common DLLs.

Thanks Brian,

Unfortunately that did not help. This is the (similar) message now:

Task '(e-mail address removed) - Receiving' reported error (0x8004210A) : 'The
operation timed out waiting for a response from the receiving (POP) server.
If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or
Internet service provider (ISP).'

Account settings 100% correct.

The strange thing I already mentioned in an earlier post is that the
- Find outgoing mail server (SMTP)
- Find incoming mail server (POP3)
have a status cancelled inmediately without seing any progress.

ciao

If I were in your shoes, I'd 1) use a webmail interface to see if there were
strange messages on the server, 2) try a brand-new profile, 3) Run a Detect
and Repair.

Hi Brian,

1) there are no strange emails in the mailbox, the last week and a half I
managed it through the webmail
2) just created a new profile but the same error comes up (connection to
exchange server is OK
3) please give more details about this Detect and Repair. From where and how?

Thanks a lot anyway for your effort!

Found the Detect and Repair by entering it as a search on Microsoft.com but
unfortunately it did not work.

Slowly becoming desparate ...

Have you, by any chance, checked the "Use SSL" option on the Advanced tab
for your POP3 account? If so, try unchecking it - if your POP3 server does
not support SSL, Outlook will time out trying to connect.

Hey, I have the same exact problem. My son is a geek and he can't find the
problem. I've unloaded OL2003 and cleaned up....reinstalled OLXP. Same issue.
Reinstalled OL2003. In test setting looks like starts to process then goes to
cancelled. In a send/receive get the same error you do "unknown". I'm
running Mozilla in the meantime and it has no issues through same server.
Makes no difference if you generate new accounts. Must be something in the
registry, I think.

I beleive the problem started when I updated my Office 2003 on the Microsoft
website.

Have you found a resolution?

Exactly the same problem with my outlook

I am experiencing the exact same issue with my outlook 2003. It all started when i obtained a SP2 version of windows xp pro and installed outlook 2003 on it. I've never had this issue before and setting are 100% correct. I am currently using mozilla thunderbird on the same machine with the same settings to check my email. Frankly, i miss outlook. Help me!

all you need to do is uninstall and reinstall outlook express, but manually remove outlook express files from c:\program files\outlook express. make a backup of these. you will need windows xp installation cd.

i had the same problem and now outlook works perfect!

Here we go, instead of trying to regsvr32 outlmime.dll which will give you:

outlmime.dll was loaded, but the dllregisterserver entry point was not found
the correct thing to do is: regsvr32 inetcomm.dll

Code:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Applications/MS_Office/Outlook/Q_21996075.html
APPLIES TO

Microsoft Outlook 2003

ps. perhaps Service Pack 6 for Visual Basic 6.0: Run-Time Redistribution Pack (vbrun60sp6.exe) is needed.

This fixed the Outlook 2003 Unknown Error 0x80040154 on my clients PC

The first thing that I did was to run a scan on the PST using scanpst function included with MS Office 2003. Check out my MySpace blog:

http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&friendID=136796912

look under the topic - What To Do When The Inbox Is Broken.

The next thing I did was the "Detect and Repair" function under the "Help" menu inside of Outlook 2003 but I made sure to check the "Discard my customized settings and restore default settings" box before starting it. Once this was completed I had to re-input the server settings for emails and then import the old PST file. There was a strange message that Outlook displayed before I did the import, which was something about a problem with a recently installed program and Outlook would correct it for me. This may have been the solution as well, but since I do not know what the client installed I am unable to know this for sure. Hope this helps the many people that seem to have this problem.
