There is a flaw in this method or at least something you had to check
before
exporting if you want to blame the export function;
In sample 2; were the amount of 2004 items found the same as the amount of
2004 items that got exported?
You're correct: my methodology was flawed. I never did a search
(according to a specified criteria) for the number of messages to be
exported, prior to doing the export (using that same criteria). Which
is to say that I never did a before and after check. Not too swift on
my part.

Thanks for pointing this out. It could be useful in the future.

Robert-

I just did a test:
» searched my current (2007) .PST file for all messages and noted the
count
» exported all msgs to another .PST file
» opened this other (export) file and searched for all messages.
» saw that the count in the export file matched the source file.

This satisfies me that export will catch all (specified) messages, if
not all the associated ancillary data (mentioned previously). I would
expect the resulting export file would therefore be "cleaner" and thus
smaller than the one that would be derived from the other method I
mentioned.¹ So, I think when the time comes to create my 2007 archive,
I'll just go with the export method.

If anyone sees any downsides² to using export to created such an archive
file, I'd welcome and appreciate your feedback.

Thanks.

1. duplicate <outlook.pst> to create <archive 2007.pst> » open <archive
2007.pst> » search for and delete all non-2007 messages.
2. besides losing the ancillary data referred to above.

Nope, that should work. Using Archive/AutoArchive should do the trick as
well. It works faster than Export so if you've got a big mailbox you could
save some time. Or simply do the Export overnight of course.

Robert-

Thanks again for the feedback and all the help. Thanks to you and the
others, I now feel much more confident about how to manage my .PST files
in general... and archiving in particular.

Much appreciated.
