OL 2000 Contacts Not Visible

Running Vista SP1, 3GB RAM, Pavilion a6250t desktop.

I've installed OL 2000 after a hard drive crash and system recovery. It
worked fine before. Now, I can get it to send and receive e-mail, but my
Contacts folder is nowhere to be found. I.e., when I click To:, all I get is
an empty Select Names dialog box. When I right-click Contacts and click
Properties>Outlook Address Book, there is no check in the box next to "Show
this folder as an e-mail address book," and both the field and "Show this
folder..." are grayed out.

How can I get my Contacts up and running again?

I've gotten them back by uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook and creating
a Microsoft Exchange Server account of some kind. Don't really know what
this is, but it offered itself in a dialog box when I tried to open OL for
the first time, and I just answered the questions to set up a profile.
