Back Up OL 2000 Settings?

A

A Baffled User

After days of trying, I have finally succeeded at getting OL 2000 to work on
my Windows Vista SP1 desktop computer. Is there a way to copy and back up on
an external hard drive the settings in the Services dialog box (under
Tools)--i.e., settings related to Internet E-mail, Outlook Address Book, and
Personal Folders--so that I can retrieve them in the future if I need to
reinstall Outlook or if something goes kerflouey?

If this is indeed possible, in what location on the Vista machine would I
have to place the file(s) thus backed up in the event of a calamity? I.e.,
where do the files need to be in order for OL to function properly?

Thanks in advance!

I can imagine you had issues getting Outlook 2000 to work on Windows Vista;
Outlook 2000 is not (fully) compatible with Windows Vista. Only Outlook 2003
SP2 and higher and Outlook 2007 are fully supported on Windows Vista.

To backup and restore all your files and settings easily, I would recommend
to use ABF Outlook Backup;
http://www.outlookbackup.com
If you decide to order use ABF-1HTJ8 to get a discount.

If you just want to backup your Outlook Data, see this guide;

You could back up the mail profile in the registry.
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging
Subsystem\Profiles

Thank you, Roady. You helped me once in January, too (when I was struggling
with similar issues--in the meantime, had a computer crash and a system
recovery). Believe it or not, I've got OL 2000 fully functional, including
autocomplete of the e-mail address in the To: field.

Thanks, Brian. You helped me last January, too. (I even gave you credit for
your suggestion on "Scott's Blog" about configuring OL 2000 for use on
Vista.)

Do you mean that I should go into the registry and export the Profiles
folder? If I export it, will the original copy still remain there in the
registry?

I wouldn't export the entire Profiles key, just the one profile that you're
using. It will not be removed if you export it, it will just be written to
a .reg file. You said it's just for emergencies, so don't expect to use
that file again unless things do go "kerflouey".

Great, thanks. Now that I've got everything working properly, I want to be
better prepared if I have another crash.
