OK to paste from Word docs?

I read somewhere that importing Word documents to FrontPage can cause
problems because of the formatting controls. Is this also true for
text that is copied and pasted?

Can I copy a page or two of text from a Word document to the clipboard
and then paste it into a FrontPage document without problems?

Thanks

Best to copy it to notepad then copy and paste from there. It takes out the
formatting that way.

You use the technique at

For the last five years, I have been dragging Word files from Windows
Explorer onto an open page in FP, and I have never had a problem. And this
way, you can keep all your font formatting. There should be no photos in the
Word doc and no html.

Now am I confused. Is it a problem or not? Several people warn of dire
consequences from using Word to create web pages, yet you say it works
just fine. Have you read the explanation at

Should work in any version
Round tripping is the feature that lets you open a MSO doc in say FP, and then back in Word or Excel

| What are "round tripping" styles?

It's not a problem
- unless you are concerned about users with other than IE or Windows being able to see you web pages (MS W generates proprietary
"bloated" html which other browsers and platforms can not always handle correctly)

I do not use Word for html. I simply use it for editing my texts, putting in
italics, bolds, font faces, etc. Again, no html or photos. Tables and lists
come out intact, although they may need reformatting to get just the look
you want. If you don't believe it works, you can check out my site:
www.dipika.org. All of the articles were dragged in from Word. If I have
tons of extra coding, I would appreciate someone pointing it out to me.

Wally, if those are the only reason you use Word, then you could use FP for
the same thing, as it support the basic Word functions.

Hi Thomas,

Hmmm, good point. I'm gonna try it. One advantage of Word, though, is that
it is easy to write macros. Since most of my texts are formatted somewhat
the same, I do a lot of it with macros, although I guess I could take a
little time and learn visual basic.

Another point: I work on a lot of stuff that people send in, and most of it
requires a lot of work like grammar, punctuation, re-arranging sentences. I
would be afraid that so much editing done in FP would indeed generate a lot
of extra code, so I use Word for what Word is good for and FP for what FP is
good for. I'll see how it works out.

Maybe I just have an emotional attachment to Word because I've been using it
since 1986. You know, for all the bitching and griping people do about MS,
I've always gotten good use out of their products and always gotten help
when I needed it.

Thanks again for the suggestion.

Wally,

I think that you will see that FP generates less code that you get with
Word, however the ability to use Macros, may be a strong reason to continue
to use Word.

I only use Word for non-web related documents or to get a word/character
count for setting field validations on web forms.

One problem I would have with editing in FP is the date. The articles on my
site all have a date of posting and a date of copyright (which means nothing
but it looks good). If I use the date stamp feature in FP, the date will
change if I open the page again later, which I would not want.

Hi Thomas,

But where is the extra code? If I could impose on your time a bit, I would
like to ask you to check out one or two of my pages and see if there is
extra code. www.dipika.org.

Thanks for answering me.

Wally,

Actually you have done very well. I only see a few line of extra code, but
that could be the result of setting a style in FP, as well as Word:

ex: <p style="margin-top: 8; margin-bottom: 0">

As for the date, you could just type those in for each article, FP will not
change them in that case.

BTW: At some point you might want to consider using a database, as the
content (from the pages I looked at) would be easier to manage.

Thomas,

Thanks for taking the time. Other people have also suggested that I use a
database, but I can't imagine what kind of database would be useful here.
Could I impose on you again and ask you for a suggestion?

By the way, there are many other features in Word that make it better than
FP for editing text. I use Word for what Word is good for and FP for what FP
is good for.

Did you find any extra coding? The reason I keep insisting on this is that
it could save people a lot of time if they knew they could do it.

Thanks again.

Thomas,

That's in the navigation bar on the left, correct? That was done directly in
FP, and I had to set the margins to get the right spacing between the
headings and the lists.

Thanks. I appreciate your taking the time.

What version of Word do you use? In my experience, Word 97 and earlier does
not produce code bloat - but does make a hash of including tables and
images, whereas Word 2000 and later seems to bloat everything it touches.
