ok, i have none of the CDs that come with the computer..(my ex hubby burned
them) so how do I reformatt my computer without them?

The formatting part would not be too difficult to do, but how will you
re-install XP without the CD's that came with the computer. For those CD's
you should contact the the manufacturer of your computer.
Is it necessary to do a format and re-install. of XP? What is your computer
doing/not doing that leads you to believe a format is necessary?

In your post just below this and about 48 minutes before you said that you received from Dell the Windows XP CD's .
So can you make up my mind as to which XP CD's you have. You can use that CD to reformat your computer. Put the CD in the CD Rom tray and boot up with it in the CD Rom. When it gives you the options to as what you want to do then select the appropriate action that you want to take.

If this is a branded computer, like HP, Sony, etc, you may find instructions
on how to order replacement discs on their web site. If not, check for a
certificate of authenticity sticker somewhere on the outside of the
computer. With the product ID from the sticker, you may be able to contact
Microsoft for instructions on how to get replacement discs.

no peter, i said they sent me a (1) CD, it was the recovery CD for
windows....that is what caused me to end up with 2 different windows on my
computer...guess maybe you need to read a little bit better huh

hey curt, like i said earlier, when Dell sent me the recovery CD for
windowsXP, I installed it and ended up with 2 windows on my computer. Now it
is running really slow. One of the windows is corrupt the other (I think) is
fine. But from what my uncle told me, they are overlapping each other..

Reformatting the hard drive would wipe it clean as a whistle. And you
don't need a CD to reformat the hard drive. But what you'd get is a
blank, clean hard drive - not even anything to boot. If you want to
reinstall Windows XP, it means a trip to your local computer store to
buy a CD of Windows XP, I'm afraid.
Any other programs on your computer that you don't have the discs for
are also gone forever if you decide to *reformat*. If you do have the
disc for *any* program, it can be reinstalled easily, of course.
But, if you buy the WinXP CD, you may not have to reformat - you can do
a "repair" install, which fixes/replaces bad Windows XP files. The big
advantage to that is that the rest of the programs on your computer
would (should) come through just as you left them.
If you do a complete format and reinstall from scratch, you will
IMMEDIATELY need to reinstall your anti-virus and anti-malware
programs, and then go online and download the updates since your new
Windows XP CD was produced. "Window Update" is the easiest way to do
that. It will take a while. And, you'd have to reinstall any and all
programs that were on your computer originally, if you wanted them back.
Reformatting - in the correct sense of the word - is an absolute
last-ditch, desperation move to get your computer back to "normal". It
is tantamount to burning your house to the ground because it needs too
many repairs, so you decide to "start over". It cures viruses, malware -
everything. But as I said, you wind up with a blank hard drive, and the
necessity of the Win XP CD to reinstall.
Don't know if this was any help to you, but there you are.
