OK MS where is the Vista Font Management Program?

I am a bit of a font fanatic but the problem with that is I have WAY too many
fonts. I prefer to delete or uninstall many of the "boring" fonts that seem
to get installed with Office and Windows etc to make space for my 300
Handwritting and other cool Fonts. I prefer not to have to scroll through
more than 600 and I have about 2500 on my system at one time.

From the Beginning Windows has had a lousy way of controlling Fonts. You
can't see what the fonts are unless you double click. Windows used to crash
with more than a few hundred. You can't uninstall without deleting or moving
manually.

I thought that with Vista there would at LEAST be some improvement on the
way Fonts are Managed - but No. In fact MS has made Font management even more
difficult. Not only is there no "thumbnails" or "Font Preview" program there
is no "disable or enable" fonts and MS has even prevented me from deleting
some fonts without taking ownership. They have LONG been deleted on my XP
machines so I know Windows runs fine without them. Also, now I can't just
MOVE the Fonts out of the directory. I have to copy and then manually delete.

I have been waiting 12 years for this? I am wondering why with all the bells
and whistles that Vista offers that it doesn't offer something this simple.

What I would LOVE to see

1> Font management Program built into Windows so you can VIEW actual FONTS
without having to open them.
2> Button to "disable" Fonts you don't like (this would move fonts from
Fonts Directory to "FontsDisabled" directory).
3> For Networks - ability to REMOTELY deploy Fonts to workstations. I run a
large network and everytime someone wants a Font I have to Manually copy the
font and logon to the workstation and Open the Font Control Panel to make it
into the cache.

Lara

Don't know what you are talking about.

Control panel shows me exactly what each font looks like when I select it.
So did Windows XP. So Did Windows 2000.

Well, I wish I could help you more, but this is all I got.
As far as I know, you will have to go beyond Microsoft and download a font
manager such as http://www.ampsoft.net/utilities/FontViewer.php. It's a
fairly plain and simple font manager but I'm sure you can find an all out
font deluxe super suite max 2000 pro font manager or something. Any, that is
the best I can do, hope it helps.

Yes - but you have to Double Click to open each one individually. There is no
thumbnails and you can't see all the Fonts in one list. AND you can't go from
Font to Font like you can with Pictures.

Hi,

Actually I do have AMP Font Viewer installed and it is OK. I just thought
they should integrate it with Windows where you can disable fonts or move
them with the click. Maybe if Google or Mac invented it first... - Microsoft
may follow.

Jesh! It ***IS*** integrated. There is a preview panel that you can select
and any font you click on will show you from 12 pt to 78 pt samples.

Hmmm, is that by default? I have Vista Premium and looked and I guess I am
not seeing what you are talking about. Is there a way to select this option
from an options menu? That would indeed be nice to have.

zaph ... Preview Pane in the Fonts Control Panel in my V Ultimate was on by
default. I am agreeing with others that I, too, had hoped for some
improvement in Font Management. Also, as an aside, with being able to print
a directory. Alas ... but there is hope ... have Extensis Suitcase on my
Wish List.

You have to go to Organize | layout and check the preview pane. Then you can
select fonts in the list window and they'll be previewed in the preview
window without having to double click on them...

another perfect example of what's wrong with the "MVP" program
While many "MVP's" are worth their weight, you sir, definitely are NOT

Your first reply to the OP
"I don't know what you're talking about"
No help mind you, just an all too typical smart-a**ed reply from you.
Why not just call everybody who comes here for help "stupid" and get it over
with?
never mind, you've already DONE that

Your second reply
"No you don't"
Still no help, just another condescending burp
could you BE any more of a pr*ck?

FINALLY, your third reply - by now the OP is obviously getting frustrated
trying to get a simple question answered and getting nothing but fluff from
you
Your answer?
"Jesh! It ***IS*** integrated." ...and you STILL didn't give the OP any
simple direction how to accomplish this.

You know Rich, why not just give it up. You don't deserve to be an MVP, you
don't act like an MVP is -supposed- to, and most of all your general
treatment of people in this NG should be enough to get you bounced outta
here.

Unfortunately you won't and you know it.
MS loves having their stable full of mindless little mercenaries like you,
unpaid zealots of the worst kind, blindly following MS's marching orders,
all while leaving MS protected against anything you might say or do, via MS
legal. Nice arrangement - for THEM

Thank you Lang. I never use the preview pane because I initially find it
annoying taking up space. However, with the Fonts this is great. Now I can
view and delete the ones I don't want. Still not a decent Font Manager but
better than it was before.

Hi Richard,

It isn't really though. I still have to click on each of the 2500 fonts ONE
at a TIME in order to view them even in the preview pane. Takes a little less
time than double clicking on them to open the window but not much.

What I mean is a App like Windows Photo Gallery only for Fonts where you can
view ALL the fonts in a LIST at once. Then a "Disable" button which would
automatically move them from the Fonts folder to a disabled Fonts Folder.

Haven't even found a 3rd party one to do it. Maybe I will ask Google? Never
know - their Picasa paved the way for photo gallery.

Lara

You youngsters are all the same <gdr>

Us old timers know about Font Management. In the old fashioned days you
needed them because there was a limit to how many fonts you could have
active in Windows and they soaked up resources but also because they
could show you categories of fonts.

The one I used even enabled you to build sets of fonts for a document
or application and have only that set come up in the font selector.
Companies have house styles and don't want employees using bizarre
fonts at will.

Who wants to have to scroll down through 300 fonts to find the one you
want each time?

But I didn't expect MS to do anything about it.

When I said "Don't know what you are talking about", I was referring to the
fact that she said that she couldn't *preview* fonts. The capability has
been there since Windows 3.1 that I can remember.

Lara,

I think most would agree that the utilities "built-in" to Windows, any
version, are basic, at best. No doubt there are better Font Management
programs out there. That said, glad you at least don't have to double click
on the font files to preview them...

Yes - I have disliked the way Windows handled Fonts since 3.11. Mac's, even
with OS 6 had a far better way to handle lots of fonts. It is one of the
reasons why Graphic Designers went to Mac's initially.
In the old fashioned days you
needed them because there was a limit to how many fonts you could have
active in Windows and they soaked up resources but also because they
could show you categories of fonts.

Old Fashion Days =) XP still chokes on more than 1000 Fonts and Adobe PC
products used to have serious problems with more than 250 Fonts. Office 2003
Organizational Chart on XP still chokes if there is more than 250 Fonts.

I run a network where they publish books and the Font management is crazy.
They want 1500 fonts available at any one time and Windows just does not like
it.

Lara

Sure you could get to see a font but font managers came in for good
reasons.

It's only recently that some applications actually show what the font
looks like in the font list by using the font -- which is fine until
you get to Windings and you don't know which one of the several it is
