I have had it and I am going to do what people told me to do a long
time ago.
I am going to reformat the drive and start over.

This is how I figure I am going to do this, please help me out if I
leave out a step or mix something up.

1) Boot with XP sp1 diskettes (6 of them)
2) once the boot is done, format the drive using
format c\:

3) Once this is formatted, boot again with the 6 diskettes. Find the
install on the CD and run setup.
4) go from there.

My concern is being able to run SETUP from the disks. If it doesn't
work, should I boot from the CD?

Thanks in advance

Forget using the diskettes, set BIOS to boot from your optical drive put the
CD in the drive and follow the prompts to install XP, you may see a msg on
screen early in the boot process to "press any key to boot from the CD"
whatch closely for this.
During setup you will be given the oportunity to delete existing partitions
and create new one formatting will take place at this time.
To enter BIOS setup depends on your machine, typically you will press the
DEL key during POST, most OEM systems HP,Compaq etc have different key
strokes for this [F2 etc].

When you say to watch closely for this - do you mean I should press a
key to boot from the cD?
Also, if I delete the partition, will it also give me the opportunity
to format?

I am trying to do what you said, but I keep getting an error saying "An

Setup failed to install the product catalogs. This is a fatal Error.
The setup logs files hould contain more information.

And it doesn't ask me to partition either. Now, again, it seems I am
stuck.

Hi David,

When you boot from the CD, the message Roberto is referring to just doesn't
stay on the screen too terribly long, so you do have to "keep your eyes
peeled". When the message comes up, press any key and take it from there.

Yes, the CD will let you format the hard drive.

There's no need for the 6 diskettes unless you system can't boot from
the CD.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Thanks Curt, but unfortunately, it doesn't get that far. As I stated,
there is an error it comes in contact with (see in my post above) and
therefore I can't install. I guess it is back to the diskettes and a
format.

Thanks Bruce, but there seems to be an error as I stated above and it
won't let me
Since I only have SP1 for XP, I tried the slipstream method tp get Sp2
on there, but the information was too big for my CD (I asked the
creator of the slipstream why it was so and he didn't get back to me -
I followed the instructions to a 't' but the information to burn to a
CD is too much for a 650meg CD.

I have had it and I am going to do what people told me to do a long

FIRST,
KEEP YOUR XP CD Rom handy. You will need it VERY soon.

#1 Boot the computer.
#2 Watch the screen CAREFULLY and when it says "Press ___ to enter
Setup" watch for the key(s) to press to enter the Setup.

Typically, you'll see F2, but you'll need to use whatever your
computer is setup for.

Once you have hit the proper key to get into the setup, look for the
screen that says "Boot Order." Follow the instructions on your screen
(computers these days are AMAZING in that they are programmed so that
if you SIMPLY READ THE SCREEN, IT WILL USUALLY TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT
TO DO NEXT)
#3 Set the boot order so that the computer boots FIRST from your
CD-Rom drive, 2nd from the C drive (hard drive), also called the IDE
drive.

Once you have set the boot order to boot from the CD-Rom drive

#4 Save the setup (it should say something like "Press F10 to save the
New Setup")

#5 Reboot. The screen MAY say "Press F10 to save the setup AND
reboot."

The point is to reboot once you have saved the boot order to boot from
the CD-Rom.

#6 As the computer is starting, you are now running from the ON-BOARD
firmware.

#7 OPen the CD Rom drive and insert the XP CD rom.

#8 AGAIN, watch the screen carefully, you MAY need to reboot with the
XP CD Rom in the CD Rom drive if you weren't quick about putting the
CD Rom in.

#9 Here is where some people think "it gets tricky."

When the computer boots WITH THE XP CD ROM IN THE CD Rom drive, you
will get a message you need to watch for.

The message will tell you,
"To boot from the CD, press any key."

#10 At this point, PRESS ANY KEY! Don't dilly dally.

It will only allow you several seconds. Some computers will
automatically go to the CD and begin reading it. Some computers will
hang. (your computer may be one that hangs at this point, if you do
nothing)

#11 Once you have pressed a key ( I recommend the Space bar), the CD
Rom drive will begin reading your XP install CD.

#12 FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS.

The computer will run through several routines, and then you will
get a

menu
asking you if you want to

1. format
or

if you want to

2. delete the partition.

# 13 Select the option to delete the partition. This will clean
whatever issues you are having with your hard drive.
This deleting the partition will only take a couple of seconds
(LITERALLY), and then you will be asked if you wish to partition.

#14 Select the option to partition, and select to partition the
maximum amount (ASSUMING you have a hard drive that is UNDER 130 GB.

The partitioning routine-- AGAIN-- only takes a few seconds, and THEN,
the formatting is AUTOMATIC.

v v THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT v v

The NEXT issue you are going to be concerned about is when the
computer reboots to continue installing XP.
You will AGAIN, when the system reboots, be asked
"Press any key to install from the CD."

DO NOT DO ANYTHING at this point! IF you press a key, you are
STARTING FROM SCRATCH AGAIN.
LEAVE THE COMPUTER ALONE. IT is now installing XP.
When the computer needs input, it will tell you.
You will be asked for your name, your company name, etc. At this
point, you will enter the information asked for.
Also be sure you have your "serial #" or "key" available. During
this process-- roughly halfway through-- you will be required to put
the # in for the installation to finish.

As for Service Pack 1, once you get the XP installed (you are at the
desktop), and everything that "installs itself on bootup", you can go
to the Microsoft website and install Service Pack 1.

Good luck!

Hi David,

When you boot from the CD, the message Roberto is referring to just doesn't
stay on the screen too terribly long, so you do have to "keep your eyes
peeled". When the message comes up, press any key and take it from there.

In fact, some computers will HANG at this point, if you don't press
a key. Other computers will AUTOMATICALLY go into the install on the
CD if you don't do anything.

Thanks Curt, but unfortunately, it doesn't get that far. As I stated,

If you partition your hard drive FIRST (from the CD) you will
eliminate whatever problem you are having

The "way around" the problem that is preventing you from
formatting/installing is very likely a bad partition.

I've had EXACTLY the problem you are describing MANY times. The
solution to the problem is

keep deleting the partition and repartitioning, and reformatting, and
keep deleting the partition and repartitioning, and reformatting, and
keep deleting the partition and repartitioning, and reformatting, and

until the XP install proceeds THROUGH the format successfully and you
are allowed to install the XP system.

If you are unable to format and install after half-a-dozen partitions,
you may need to take it to a shop. Your problem MAY be hardware!
(like you need a CD Rom drive)

The times half-a-dozen repartitions didn't work, I swapped out my CD
Rom drive. WA la! The issue WAS a bad CD rom drive!

good luck!

Thanks Bruce, but there seems to be an error as I stated above and it

It won't let you WHAT?

You have now 3 or 4 times said, "it won't let me".

What won't the computer allow you to do?

Since I only have SP1 for XP, I tried the slipstream method tp get Sp2
on there, but the information was too big for my CD (I asked the
creator of the slipstream why it was so and he didn't get back to me -
I followed the instructions to a 't' but the information to burn to a
CD is too much for a 650meg CD.

So don't use the SP 2, and don't use the 6 diskettes until you figure
out how to do it.

I reformatted and reinstall perfectly with the 6 diskettes. I know it
is probably archaic, but it worked. Thanks for all the help.
