Hey guys,, its me again i need help again T.T
so i finally finished installing my windows xp with SP3
with the knowledge that my harddrive MIGHT be damaged or my computer not
being able to support sp3..either way the new reformatted computer is still
kinda laggy, but not as SLOW SLOW SLOW as before i reformatted.
so i am asking what i should do next to finish off this slowness..
are there any drivers i should download to help support the sp3
or should i take to a computer repair guy and have him check it out?

Computer information:
Windows XP proffesinal with sp3(used to be sp2 before reformat)
448 mb of ram
hmm im not too much of a computer expert so i dont know what else to put.

try this:

control panel
system
advanced
performance

then set the machine for best performance

You need to post the full specification of your PC if you want
a good answer. 448 MBytes is fine but your processor speed
may be low. By the way - if you want lots of answers to your
question then a Subject line of "Slow PC" would attract the
attention of many more people than "OK finally".

RAM is low if you run more than a couple programs at a time, especially
if you don't have a dedicated video card.

You should find out what type of video card you have (or video chip on
the motherboard) and install the latest driver update, as the one used
by XP is old and not optimized for the specific device.

You may have a 5,400 rpm hard drive which slows things down.

But if you add the costs of improving performance on an older machine,
it may be more beneficial to buy a newer one if funds permit.

What is the CPU speed? Is the PC slow with only XP installed or did you
install software as well? Do you have AV installed and if so, does it do a
scan upon booting? Like most of the others, I would install more ram
providing you have a half way decent CPU. If you think the hard drive is
damaged, get diagnostic software from the maker's web site and test it.

were can i download this diagnostic software if the maker of my computer was
microsoft? or my computer has a "intel inside pentium 4" sticker on it?

btw how do i add more RAM? :p

EDIT: i forgot to add that i have not installed anymore software. as soon as
the reformat finished it has been laggy.
i did the control panel thing that philo has suggested and it seems to go a
TINY big faster

Microsoft doesn't make computers--it makes software.

The P4 sticker identifies the type of CPU and since it is a Intel P4, it is
fast enough to handle XP. To find the CPU speed, right click My Computer,
Properties and it will be displayed on the General tab.

You can open the case and look at the outside of the hard drive to find out
the maker and model. Then go to the maker's web site and look for
diagnostic software. There is also software (Belarc Advisor for example)
that should identify the drive. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

You have to check the mobo specs or with the computer maker to find out if
your PC will accept more ram. Considering it has a P4 CPU, I would be
surprised if it will not take one or two GB or more. I have a Dell with a
P4 3GHz CPU and the mobo has four slots that will accept 1 gb of ram each.

I don't think a lack of ram is what is your problem is since you have not
loaded software yet. You need to run the hard drive diagnostic or get the
machine to a qualified repairman to see what ails it.

Ah thank you for your response, it cleared up something. i downloaded the
diagnostic software from my harddrive providers site(western digital) turns
out that the hard drive is fine. the diagnostic test thing said everything
was fine.
i dont know what else to do now, since you said RAM dosnt seem to be the
problem. should i take it to the repairman? any guess/estimates how much this
will cost?

What I said about your *amount* of ram is that your machine should not be
bogging down just running XP. If you were running an Office Suite, a big
graphics program, etc., then more ram might help. What I would do is
contact a repairman, explain what is happening, tell what you have tried and
then ask if he/she has any ideas, if there is a free estimate, etc. Shops
in my area charge $60 an hour on up.

Any MS OS upgrade makes your pc slower.
