ok a question about master, slave etc

I bought my pc from a company; everything was already put in there. So I
have a 40gb Excelstor hard drive as Primary Master, and a cdburner as
Primary Slave. This is at least what it says in the POST test screen on
bootup. Is this setup correct? I'm assuming it is because it works!

Now, later on, I decide to fit my old pc's 10gb Maxtor hard drive to this
new pc as extra storage - no OS, just space. So being the novice I was, I
connected it to the spare Secondary IDE channel. I used MaxBlast 3 to format
and setup the new drive. For some reason I set the jumpers to slave, which
must have been wrong, right??

Anyhow, even though my pc recognises my new drive as "I" in MyComputer, when
I go into standby, and come back out, the "I" drive has gone. I have to go
into Device Manager and ask it to scan for hardware changes, then it
appears. After that I can use the drive as normal, no problems; cdburner,
primary master appear under Primary IDE channel; old drive appears under
Secondary IDE channel. Should the new drive appear on the POST screen?
Because it doesn't, only the Primary Master/Slave do.

Now is this setup wrong? Should the two drives be connected as Master/Slave,
and the cdburner alone on the Secondary IDE channel? Or should I just
correct the jumper setting? I know it sounds like I don't know what I'm
doing, but I do! I'm just a bit unclear on a few things.

You are better off putting the Cd Burner on the secondary
channel as it runs slower and will bog down the faster
master drive.

Hi Tim,

Connect the secondary hard drive as a slave on the primary ide controller.
Set jumpers accordingly.

Connect the CD drive as the master on the secondary ide controller and set
the jumpers as master.

Enter the BIOS and make sure both controllers are set to autodetect.
