Hello group,

I installed an old copy of NAV 2001 on a new computer running on XP
with the hope of purchasing an update. Now my computer will not run.
It boots up, loads the desktop icons, a few software registration
reminders pop-up, then it turns off and starts to boot up again. If I
don't press the power button it repeats this over and over without
getting anywhere.

I have tried uninstalling NAV 2001 through the control panel while in
safe mode, but it will not allow me to unistall. I have printed out
instructions on how to uninstall NAV 2002 from XP (Symantec did not
have instructions for uninstalling 2001, since 2001 is not compatible
with XP - now they tell me!) manually by deleting from the registry,
but I'm a bit nervous about doing this since I know the registry is a
dangerous place to be for someone who is unexperienced.

Has anybody had a similar experience? Any advice on things to try to
remedy this problem?

thanks for your help,
nancy

Nancy -
The Registry can be intimidating for anyone - but it sounds
like things can't get too much worse.
Boot your computer in Safe Mode - then go to Start >
Run and type in regedit and then hit OK.
When the next screen comes up click on File > Export and
give the resulting file some name you can remember. This
saves a copy of the present Registry so that at the very
worst you can get it back. Now go thru the steps that
Symantec suggests and maybe you'll get it working.
good luck -

Nancy,

Since you can get into Safe Mode, try reinstalling the application,
using the instructions here:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/nav2001.htm

There is a patch that's still available from Symantec that makes it
work
with XP. Its worth a shot.
Or why not try going into Safe Mode and doing a System Restore to before
you installed the application?
