Offline folders: long delay @ login

I have a laptop with offline folders coming from 2 servers, say a few
thousands files.
When opening a windows session, immediately after the login, it takes a
couple minutes to get the notebook responsive to user input, due to enormous
disk activity.
IMHO the computer is scanning the offline cache to check file status.

1) Is it possibile?
2) If so, is there anyway to speed up this process?
3) Is there any in depth review of offline folders?

Thanks

Offline Folders - stop using then if at all possible.
especially with that amount of data - you need to think of something else.
(Thousands of files - dozens opened in any given day I bet.)

Wow!!!!

Thusands files yes, a few updated every day, sync is very fast.

It's a few years I'm using them now, the only thing I liked is that
management is transparent, sync is performed automatically and best of all
file and folders are accessed in the same way if they were
connected/disconnected.
No need to access a "backup location".

Apart from that, sometimes sync fails, and as I've said the login is SLOW.
I've never found an in depth article about this technology

The technology is in flux and it changes with every Windows and
Service Pack release...

It's been one of my pet peeves for a while now...
