Office Word 2003

I have Office Word 2003. Sometimes when I receive a Word document from
someone else who has a more recent version of Word, when I open the document,
it is in another language or some combination of letters and numbers that
does not make sense. Do I need to do some sort of update to my 2003? Or do I
need to get a whole new version?
